Democratic Congressman Dwight Evans (PA-02) released the following statement after Senate Republican Leadership unveiled a draft of their healthcare bill:
Republicans in the House and Senate say Obamacare is collapsing in our communities nationwide; yet today as a response to fix this ‘so called’ crisis, Senate Republican Leadership has released their draft of a bill that does nothing but reduce access to adequate healthcare. As it stands now, the Senate healthcare bill makes extreme cuts to the federal Medicaid program and doubles down on the President’s vow to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care).
Today’s action demonstrates that the Republican Party is completely out of touch with the needs of the American people. The healthcare debate in our country should be about increasing funding, promoting prevention, and protecting and enhancing the quality of life for each and every person in Philadelphia, the Commonwealth and our nation. The peace of mind which millions of Americans gained with passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act is being undermined by the actions of callous Republicans in a methodical, vengeful way rather than an open, transparent and thoughtful democratic policy process.
The Republican party says ‘they have a responsibility to act.’ Instead of cutting off a lifeline to stability in our neighborhoods, they should instead work across party lines to build a healthcare system that gives our neighborhoods the tools and resources they need to make decisions that are in the best interests of the health and safety of themselves and their families.
Congressman Dwight Evans proudly voted “No” on H.R. 1628, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) on May 4, 2017 as this bill will have a crippling impact on the health, safety and quality of life for Philadelphians, Pennsylvanians and Americans nationwide.
