The New York Times writes that the Progressive Change Committee is running a TV spot to lobby President Obama to let the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans expire.
Their spokesperson? Illinois Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.
“He can keep his promise and make sure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes,” Stephanie Taylor, a co-founder of the group, said in a statement. “Or he can break his promise, add billions to our national debt, and leave his past supporters demoralized by caving to Republicans even when they are clearly wrong. The choice is his.”
To that end, the group’s television advertisement shows Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the top Republican in the House, signaling that he would vote for a measure that did not include an extension of the tax cuts for those with higher incomes – if that were his only option. But Mr. Boehner, who made those comments in September, September and quickly backed off them after conservatives protested, has also said consistently of late that he wants the tax cuts extended for all Americans – a view that appears to be commonplace among congressional Republicans.
