Relative to most European countries occupied by German forces during WWII, Denmark was a refuge. Invaded by Germany in 1940, the country was declared a protectorate, bestowing its government and citizenry with freedom from direct German oversight. However, by August of 1943, circumstances had changed and Denmark was no longer the safe haven it once was. With the German Wehrmacht on the ground, it was evident that Jews had two options: leave for Sweden or risk being rounded up by the Nazis.
ACROSS THE WATERS is told from the perspective of Arne (David Dencik) and Miriam (Danica Curcic), a young Jewish couple attempting to escape Copenhagen with their son. This tense thriller also follows the stories of the local men and women who risked their lives to aid their journey, shedding light on one of the most daring rescue missions in WWII history.
With beautifully haunting cinematography and an assured and evocative score, this gripping period drama examines humanity’s most sublime and bestial elements when confronted by its own mortality.
